haha - you can gladly get on the phone for me if you can get me a plan for $30!!! But if you look at the breakdown it's $30 for the data and $40 for the talk and $5 for the text. Currently I have some loyalty program that gives me a $10 break on the talk.
Yeah, it's a rip off to me to pay more and get less! I had double your data at 4GB prior to getting Unlimited and called Verizon to see if they would drop me back to that if I got a contract phone but they said no. I don't think you can even get individual plans anymore unless you already had one - they're really pushing the Share stuff.
So I want to just buy a phone and not renew my contract if it means keeping my unlimited data, even though I don't use that much. But what I don't understand is the process of how I go from buying a phone on eBay to replacing the Razr on my account.
OK, thanks for explaining -- much clearer now. I think we started off with different assumptions (I have unlimited like you, by the way!). Let me try some math, holding the talk ($40) and text ($5) constant across options:
Scenario 1: use your upgrade on unlimited line
$200 for new phone
$30 same cost for data, but switch to 2GB capped plan
Total new cost = $200 for new phone but you lose unlimted
Scenario 2: buy used phone on eBay
$350 (random guess) for used/like new phone
$30 unlimited data unchanged***
Total new cost = $350 (or as much as $500) for used phone
Scenario 3: buy new phone at full price
$600 (or so) for unsubsidized phone
$30 unlimited data unchanged***
Total new cost = ~$600 (ouch)
Scenario 4 (discussed at length on this thread): use a new line to do the "switcheroo"
Use new line to buy new smartphone, then smartphone is switched immediately to the unlimited line, and the new line is switched to a call-only feature phone
$200 subsidized phone, put on new line
$10/month for a new line
$30 unlimited data unchanged***
Total new cost = $200 + $240 (plus monthly taxes/fees) = ~$480
To conclude, Scenarios 2-4 preserve your unlimited data plan, with new costs (over 2 years) of ~$350-$500, ~$600, ~$480.
It sounds like you're leaning toward the "eBay" option. If so, I think other members here will help more but my understanding is once you received the used phone, you can either go into a Verizon store to get a new SIM card, or call VZW and they'll mail you one. I can't say for sure that you could use the one from your previous phone. HOWEVER, the one thing other owners here will help with is ensuring that you check the phone ID and make sure that it's good.
And oh I just caught something: you shouldn't pay $580 for a like-new S4 on ebay -- a few owners here have seen much better deals.
