New Razr Maxx, some questions

I just bought the Razr Maxx today and have a few questions-How do I root it? I can't find a guide online that I understand.What happens if I screw something up? Is there an SBF or some equivalent or could I permanently brick the phone?How do I do a battery pull without being able to pull the battery?

Thanks, I've got it rooted and installed safestrap. I'm on system version 6.12.181 Android Version 2.3.6, which ROMs can I install and how do I install them? Also, what is fastboot?
