The notification bar is a big issue, it is WAY too dark, even when brightness is at 100 percent.

Interesting, i never noticed the bar being too dim. Of course i only stayed on .211 for a day or two before going back down to .209.

I updated, Ill test the battery life and report in a couple of days if its improved or not.

I think it's about preference. I used to hate how pronounced the old notification was. It made everything ugly. I used ADW to hide it. This new one is less obtrusive and in line with Holo theme that other software use. Now I don't have to give up function for style. I really hope they don't touch it. IMHO.

You don't have to be rooted to do this. Just place the update zip on your SD card and boot into stock recovery and apply the update.

I'm new to this...in the future will I be able to receive OTA updates if I install this now, or will it cause an issue with that?

Edit: if I decide to wait because surely I'd mess up this process for manually updating, do you think this update would be available OTA soon?

Yes you will still be able to receive future OTA updates. As far as time line for when they will push it to phones, there is no telling anything I say would be a guess.
