Hi so I recently got a Motorola RAZR i hand-me-down because my last Samsung phone broke...
anyway, as the Motorola phone has been reset it's gone back to the 2.3.4 system! I am trying to obviously update to at least 4.0 but everytime I try 'check for updates' it just says that there are no available updates and that it is already up to date...
I don't know how to update and really not great when it comes to phone!
Help!! Thanks!

Gingerbread is an old version, and since the last update I have noticed, was for the 'X' and many suspect this was a fluke.
I doubt your device will receive an OTA from Verizon, you will need to locate a newer version for your phone with the search options here, there are updated versions of Gingerbread, as well as ICS , Jelly Bean and KitKat, of which later versions might suit your device far better than older ones such as Ice Cream Sandwich and even Gingerbread.
You can try XDA-Developers, they have a listing of usable updates for the Razr.
Every device update has different versions of the same update, according to that device's firmware build, so look for compatible versions for your Razr only.
