Motorola Droid 2.1

I wouldnt say we wont see Android 2.1 at or even for a long time. It has already been confirmed by Motorola that the Droid will get Android 2.1. If i had to guess i'd say sometime this week but again it depends what the cause of the original holdup is.

Please though guys stop with all the gloom and doom of how we will never get 2.1 or we wont have it for months. It'll happen soon enough.

I can't find the quote (and I may be mistaken...it could have been conjecture in the article that I read), but at the release of the Nexus One, Motorola's CEO said that the Droid would get 2.1 by the end of January. Now, if the rumors are true that Motorola has delivered the Droid 2.1 update to Verizon, then that is technically true. Which would mean that the only thing left to do is push the OTA update.

As far as the holdup goes, if we assume that 2.1 has been given to Verizon, then it almost has to be one of three things.
1) A last minute bug fix
2) Problems with the OTA push
3) Verizon is waiting until after the Apple announcement on Wednesday (to avoid stealing the spotlight from the announcement)

If the problem is (1) then it might be a week or two before we see the final release. If the problem is (2) then we will probably see a release before the end of the month. If there is no problem and it ends up being (3) then hopefully Verizon doesn't start ignoring Droid owners once they get the iPhone/iPad.

Every phone that Verizon sells gets to a point where it is no longer the "darling". At this point they begin placing focus on newer models.

I think the Droid is quickly approaching this point if not already there.

If this were not true we would already have the latest operating system.

They have already made tons of improvements to even the 2.1 operating system. And the people that will get them will be the ones that buy the newest latest phone that comes with the 2.2 or 3.0. I have no doubt that if they wanted to they could push 2.1 out to all of us already.... but they don't. We may get it at some point, but they will do it when there is a benefit for them, not us. Do you really think that in 2 years when all of our contracts were up that we will be at whatever operating system is out at the time? Not a chance, they want everyone to upgrade their phones every 2 years...

Business and Politics

The only way you will ever remain on the top of the latest software is if you are rooted and load it yourself when it comes out.

Well, the Droid may not be Verizon's "darling" but it is Motorola's. I suspect Motorola is in a hurry to get 2.1 out so the phone looks current...

What do you think about this: Google had an agreement with Apple not to put multitouch on the Android phones. With the popularity of the android phones Google and App;e are not playing ice together anymore. Maybe the delay is to implement multi-touch in the Droid (I hope, I hope)

At any rate, if 2.1 doesn't come to the Droid, I will defiantly root it.

Monty

um sorry to burst your bubble.. but the droid does have multitouch. the stock apps dont use it though. download dolphin browser. its completely multitouch.

Bubble is FAR from burst. I have xScope and other apps that use miltitouch. I was referring to their implementation in stock apps.

I was told by Verizon rep in Nov that Nissan BT fixed by Jan

The Nexus owners are saying it does NOT fix the infiniti/nissan Bluetooth issue - that is frustrating
I went to my local Verizon store one week after getting my Droid back in November because bluetooth wasn't working correctly in my 2007 Maxima. I was assured that this would be fixed probably in the December update (2.01) but, if not, surely by the January update.

Maybe the official OTA push from Verizon will fix this issue.:icon_eek:

What issues does it have w/ Nissans? I have mine paired to my 09 Murano and have had no issues with calls.

im just looking forward to having my phone not be laggy when unlocking it, it sits on the unlock screen for a good 10 seconds before it unlocks. And sometimes it unlocks and everything is orientated to landscape despite having the phone in a complete upright and vertical position.

my phone does not like the 2.0.1 firmware.

Reported by many users is that when an infiniti/nissan from 2007-2008 initially starts a call, the line is full of static, and the person on the other end of the line can not hear you. The trick is to send it to handset, then take it back to the car. It seems like there are 2 profiles in use? one to connect, one to talk. the connect one seems broken. Not sure if/when infiniti would get around to addressing this, it used to work with android version 1.1, seems to have broken in 1.5

I dont remember where I heard this but I heard that 2.1 might come out the 25th. So much for that idea. I JUST WANT IT TO COME OUT. the live wallpapers are so sick!!! I wonder if droid will have some exclusive wallpapers like a droid eye that pulses when you touch the screen. What would droid exclusive live wallpaper would you like to see?

I know you guys will slaughter me for saying stuff like this because the Droid is like a religious thing to some people. But... My opinion is that if Verizon wanted to they could push out 2.1 TODAY, but do they want to?

Unless there is a good enough reason for Verizon to push 2.1 like "bug fixes" and such, they will not be in a big rush. If the main difference in 2.1 is cosmetic they will get to it when they get to it, because it is going to cost them money. NO company likes to spend money. No doubt when they push this to over a million phones there will be a certain percentage that will have problems, or complaints. There will be some that simply don't like the changes. There will be problems, phones replaced because customers don't know what they are doing, support dollars spent.

Doing a software push when the phone was only a month old was easier, plus it was primarily bug fixes so there was an urgent need. Cosmetic changes is not urgent.

1.5 million Droids vs 90 million other subscribers is about 2 percent of their business.

If the Iphone comes to Verizon how many of those do you think they will sell? Very quickly Iphone sales will dwarf the Droid sales.

All the phones that came before the Droid use older operating systems.... and how fast do they seem to be getting pushed to the latest flavor?

I love my Droid, and I think Verizon will run with the Droid brand in the future with much success. They will update the phones at some point, but it will be done when there is benefit for THEM. We can look forward to a few more updates over the next year or so. But when it comes closer to the time that all the initial Droid contracts come to an end there is no chance that it will be up to date with what is coming out in new Android phones. Verizon will want you to buy a new phone with the latest cool features and lock into another 2 year contract. The million they are spending on advertising is in an effort to skyrocket the sales, if that happens the Droid will keep Verizons attention, if not...

And for those that insist that the Droid is Verizons "darling", just wait and see what happens if Verizon gets the Iphone. There will be a new darling in town....

On the flip side I think the Iphone is a good reason to speed up the 2.1 update. The Iphone has a much smoother UI and 2.0.1 can't compete. So for that reason I would think Verizon would want to get it out sooner rather than later. It's the cosmetic stuff that makes people enjoy their phones.

My posts are not meant to upset anyone, but to get more interesting conversation going vs "I didn't get the update yet" stuff.

Thoughts or opinions?

if 2.1 makes the droid run smoother on all aspects then im all for being patient and wait for them to smoothen everything first

Okay, I have kept quiet and read all 71 pages of this thread and have only a couple of comments. Yes I agree that sending the OTA is a cost to Verizon and that since most of what the 2.1 update is speculated to do is cosmetic, Verizon is not in much of a hurry. However, Verizon has a contract with Motorola for the Droid. Motorola and Google are in direct competition with each other for market share of their android phones. Therefore, you can bet that Motorola is not going to sit by and calmly wait knowing that their competitor is running 2.1 and the Droid is not. Motorola is going to be pushing Verizon to get the update out there to keep their customers happy. Motorola doesn't want Google to get a leg up on the market share because Google's phone is running a better OS.

So, I really believe we are going to get the 2.1 and I suspect we will have it shortly. Remember the December update was leaked out about 2 weeks before the OTA update. Since this update will be much larger, I think we will see it sometime during the first part of February.

Lets face it folks, these Droids have the capacity to do so much more than most of us are using. I love my Droid and have since I got it back a week after it came out. I had no expectations when I purchase it for any kind of "new" OS so when this one does come out it will be like a new phone all over again.

We all want the 2.1 OS and we all want it bad. But be honest, those of us who have been with Verizon for a while had no idea the capabilities of an android phone until the Droid came out and that blew our minds. So we have to wait for an update, we still have the best phone out there on the market today and I really believe Motorola wants to keep it that way.

just my thoughts.

I stated in another thread, and believe it makes sense, that even though 2.1 might be ready to roll for Droid, VZW/Moto aren't doing it because of one thing....

Google just launched the Nexus One, with Android 2.1 on it. Right now, sales are not that great, and from what I have read, the N1 is having some issues with it's OS. It makes sense to me, that Google is not allowing updates to the Droid/Eris right now, because they want to get 2.1 straightened out for their "flagship" phone. The N1 is Google's, HTC may have made it, but it was designed, from what I understand, by Google, for Google, to promote their "Google Experience" as it were. Yes, the Droid is a "Google Experience" phone, but, the Droid was build by Motorola without as much input from Google. T-Mobile provides the network, and the marketing, but Google stands to profit the most from this phone proving to be popular. Updating the Droid, an already stable device, as well as the Eris, with a good customer satisfaction could direct sales away from the N1, and to the pockets of VZW/Motorola more so then themselves.

A consumer looking for a smart phone, might consider a Droid with 2.1 over an N1 with 2.1, because the Droid is more stable, and the N1 has been having some trouble. Believe me, when I was making a decision on which phone I wanted, I looked at everything VZW offered, not just the Droid, and weighed pros and cons, read consumer reviews, and well as tech reviews on the devices, and ultimately decided on the Droid. Almost anyone will do that, because people by smart phones because they want the productivtiy/organizer benefits that come with it, and if they are going to plunk down a couple of hundred dollars for a device, they are going to make sure they are buying the one that will work best for them.

So, if the N1 is having issues, and Google allows the "competition" to be upgraded, they are cutting their own throats, in a way, because they then would be taking the focus off of their "flagship". Google has an interest in the Droid, and the Eris, they helpled develop them, but the N1 is their baby, and they are going to want it to succeed, so if that means letting Droid owners hang a bit while they stabilize 2.1 for the N1. When they get bugs ironed out, complaints go down, and sales go up, they will release the 2.1 to the rest of us.

Start thinking late spring, early summer....
