Motorola Droid 2.1

22nd 2.1 will be out I guess they go in order of who bought the phone first gets the update pushed through first. Thats what the VZW rep. said also Flash isn't suppose to be in 2.1 according to the rep. so people who were saying that don't get your hopes up to high:)

Two more things for the night.

(1) I highly doubt 2.1 will be released on the 22nd. Maybe the next week but I won't totally blow it out yet

(2) Flash is not included with 2.1 but Flash 10.1 is coming by mid 2010. It is my understanding that we will see 2.1 before we see flash available

Aww. I thought you said 2.1 would be coming out earlier and as early as yesterday, but sometime this week.

Another week won't hurt though.

I had to go to a Verizon Store yesterday for an issue with my Droid. The sales rep who was helping me wasn't sure how to fix my issue, so he asked for help. Another rep claimed he was this store's Droid expert and offered to help. Since he said he was the expert, I asked him when the 2.1 update would happen. Without pausing he said, Jan. 22. Take that for what it's worth.

I just don't have a good feeling about that. Hope he's right.

I've been told just that it's a patch. It' is necessary and is installed. Unlike his article . I also saw a report of s user who was rooted before the patch and wasn't after the patch :icon_ devil:.

At first that sounded like only those who have rooted their phone need the maintenance patch so they can get 2.1, but that doesn't sound like thats the case...

apparently non rooted users have been getting it too.

As for me.. I aint got squat yet. :)

I'm kinda excited to see the OTA notification since I never saw it the first time (got impatient, did it manually lol)

LOL!... me too.. I did it manally the first time, which I"m glad I did as I wrote down all the instructions and know how to do it now as I'm not an android guru.
But I've never gotten an OTA update!.. it will be different. :)

How did you do it manually? I am patient, I mean impatient, to get the update.

We did the 2.0.1 update manually. You can't do 2.1 manually until someone either leaks the update or someone gets it OTA and uploads it somewhere for others to use. They would also have to upload a manual version of the patch that is going around since it appears that it's required.

I did mine manually last time too and have gotten nothing so far. this is why I was weary about doing it manually next time.

maybe that is why we haven't gotten the update this time? I sure hope not o

The 2.0.1 update got leaked out and we could download it, put it on the droids SD card, follow a sequence of procedures to install it and "Wa-la".. we had it!....

But as of yet, the 2.1 has not been leaked.... if it does you'll know it as the forum will light up like a roman candle!

I think there has been a pretty stiff warning by Google and Verizon this time that any leaks "will" result in termination.

Not sure why its such a big deal unless they want to be able to add additions to the fix up to the last minute without having to change the number.

Once it gets leaked and it its called "2.1" for instance.. any later changes would have to be called something different like 2.1.01 or similar to prevent confusion... its can get messy.

There was already a handful of people that had trouble doing the manual install and I imagine Verizon didn't appreciate people wanting thier phones replaced because they were delving into areas they shouldn't be and that are not covered under normal user operating protocol.

There is a reason they make it difficult to do manually and mindless to do OTA.... too many people don't understand the gravity of screwing up an OTA firmware update.. it can brick your phone.

Its like many things... no big deal if nothing goes wrong and you follow and understand the instructions... but there was plenty of room for error and space for unanswered questions with newbies as myself.

Although I've built many computers and am comfortable updating firmware, I'll have to say I was relieved to see that mine installed successfully.

I know enough to know its dangerous...that fear is why I did ok because I paid attention to what I was doing..... but many laypeople are babies to any of this and very presumptuous and don't know enough to even be careful when their hand is near a flame.

I was told that we should get the update as long as we didn't specifically modify the phone to stop receiving them. So like me, I am rooted but thats all I've done, no more modifications. I should receive the update. The update WILL disable root, but that is fine.

Not sure how true it is, but that is what I've heard...

Wasn't the 2.0.1 zip actually posted by Google though?

I don't remember that update coming out until some people had already gotten the OTA

The zip wasn't posted publicly by Google, someone found out the path that the phones downloaded from when they got the OTA. They then visited that path from a desktop to download the update.zip. So it DID come directly from Google but they didn't post it anywhere.

I do remember is was posted on a google site "thats where I downloaded it from".... but I don't know if that came from google, or someone who worked at google and then traced the pathway as you said and then posted that.

------------Edit.. I think I just said what you said in a different way.. sorry

just got back from the Verizon store to have them check out why my phone has such a crappy signal. They did some "Basic troubleshooting" and said it may be a little better now, but also that there's a new firmware update coming out this weekend and that I should wait to see if that improves signal quality before swapping out the phone itself.

So another check in the release on the 22nd-23rd box
