Motorola Droid 2.1

So in efforts to hopefully get this 2.1, should I uninstall the current 2.1 that I rooted on my phone?

Back on post 369
I also saw a report of s user who was rooted before the patch and wasn't after the patch

I don't know if that means you can sit tight and it will do it all for you or you need to uninstall....by that post, it sounds like you don't need to do anything.

I don't blame you for wanting to know before it releases so your not passed up.

If you already have the 2.1 rooted to your phone, do you even need the new OTA update?.. are there any differences you would benefit?

I don't blame you for wanting a clean virgin update though so you can go from there and re-root if you want..... seems there are some things going on with this manual update that they are keeping hush hush... that would make me concerned and give me reason to wonder if I would be missing out if I was rooted and somehow couldn't get that maintenance update and the 2.1 following.

I can only speculate.. hopefully our illustrious Mod will shed some light! :icon_ banana:

I'm starting to get the feeling there may have been some type of setback with 2.1..anybody else sensing that? It seems as if they have stopped pushing the OTA maitanance update...not that it would be the end of the world...as I stated in the thread concerning the maitanence update, there really is no reason for anybody in DROID NATION to be angry...
Simply bc we are all holding the best piece of mobile technology currently on the market...2.1 will just be "icing on the cake", launching us that much higher above 2nd best! ...

When you consider how may Droids there are out there now, the head count of this forum and all the others concerning the subject combined is a very tiny slice of the total... so its hard to know who is getting what.
I wouldn't say "setback" until the 22nd is past at least..... based on what the buzz is at Verizon and all, it appears to be expected by this weekend.... thats the 23rd... so we'll see.

I would certainly rather wait if I have to and get the latest and greatest than deal with bugs etc.

As much as I like updates and new toys, I don't like wasting my time figuring out stuff thats far too deep in code for me to do anything about... I'd rather wait.

I did mine manually last time too and have gotten nothing so far. this is why I was weary about doing it manually next time.

maybe that is why we haven't gotten the update this time? I sure hope not o

I haven't done anything to my phone and I haven't gotten anything either so, don't sweat it yet.

It's likely that this update removes root because it's creating a local install folder in root, but it's probably hidden and they'd rather you not find it. 2.0.1 was only 10.1MB because it was a very minor update. 61.4MB is nearly the ENTIRE Android OS. I have both SDKs, 2.0.1 and 2.1 and both system image files are 73.xMB. So, it's removing root and not installing the update. I still believe the installer will come in another 12.2MB package (which totals the entire 2.1 system image size in the SDK; not sure how much compression, if any, there is) as Motorola finalizes 2.1 with Google's support.

They might be fixing some last minute issues as well, which is very common. I highly doubt we'll see an update here in CA until the storms pass. Doesn't take much to fail a CRC check and OTA files are particularly sensitive, esp. system updates. I've seen Verizon trucks all over the place here checking towers.

Ahh! There's no edit function or did I miss it?

I just wanted to add that it makes more sense to me to release the entire 2.1 system OTA to do a completely fresh install for all phones, including the modded ones with custom stuff. It's like why would they release an update to go back to 2.0.1 when 2.1 has way more changes to the system? It'd be much more efficient, to me, to go ahead and do a full system install of 2.1 instead, since that's what's going to be installed regardless (whenever they release the installer OTA). It can also prevent any compatibility problems that come with just a core update like 2.0.1.

Exactly how much kool aid did you drink? :icon_ devil:

Supposedly it just "unroots" you. Btw I'm a pretty big half-mexi.

and ive had it for several years...10+. its part of me now.

And that good news about that.

all i rooted for was screen caps anyway.

You're killin me...knowledge is the key to success!! Enlighten us!!

I've been told just that it's a patch. It' is necessary and is installed. Unlike his article . I also saw a report of s user who was rooted before the patch and wasn't after the patch :icon_ devil:.

OK, I didn't take the time to read all 41 pages, cuz, to be honest, I have a life. But...in regard to 1/22 and what it holds, 1/22 was the date included in the original internal Verizon document that was leaked back on 11/09. It discussed both the 12/11 and 1/22 updates. I'm not sure where all this talk of a pre-update for 2.1 etc really comes from. 1/22 was identified as a target date for an update as far back as 11/09...that's right, over 2 months ago. And, if you read the document, it is pretty well defined what Verizon was hoping to have included at that time.

Motorola DROID and HTC DROID Eris OTA updates rumored to hit December 11? Boy Genius Report

Now, it's possible that they have added more items since then, but, they came pretty close to their 12/11 date, so I see no reason to think they won't be close on this one.

Also, if you remember, Verizon provided a communication that leaked the day before 2.0.1 started getting pushed out. It was the text that people would see when they got the update. I haven't seen anything like that yet, and wouldn't be surprised if something like that is the precursor to the next push.
