Phone was working fine the all of a sudden the touch screen stopped working. I have a pattern lock on it took it to verizon and they sent me a replacement. But they want the defective phone back i took out the sd and sims card and put them in new phone. My question is what data is still on my defective phone and is there a way to make sure nothing sensitive is still on the defective phone

Well you can boot to recovery and do a data wipe. This will erase your passwords, user installed apps, etc. It will not erase the internal storage though. By practice return phones are usually wiped when received.

To get into stock recovery power down. If the screen will not work to do this then force power down by holding the power button and pressing volume down. Then hold both volume buttons as you press power. You should get a menu in white letters, using the volume rocker select recovery. When you see the android on its back press both volume buttons and there you have stock recovery. Select data wipe and yes to erase.
