Check delivery reports in the stock messaging app. I though Handcent had delivery reports, but a quick look I couldn't find it.

I'm not sure about regular text messaging but I know of an app called Kik messenger which is an app that will let you chat with anyone else with smart phone as long as they also have the app. That tells you when they have read it and when they are typing
