Is Sapphire being Thromed?

I was able to apply the new Luna Theme made specifically for Blackdroid's UDExtreme 3.5 and so far everything works! While it great to have a new theme is sucks if BD is once again ripping off someones work and passing it off as his own without proper credit. The only thing that doesn't work so far is in settings/UD and changing things in the user interface since it's probably something he actually did add himself, Gem settings is working though.

First off, lets not open threads to cause problems, contact people and find out what is really going on before posting a thread on here.

The Luna Theme theme I made is an update.zip and to understand most themes in this format they simply replace a bunch of system apk files. Now, people don't understand how themes work so they apply a theme for 2.0.0 to 3.5.0 and most of the time yes, it works, however you might notice small issues, displacements, or just different functions in apps. Now, because you put my Luna Theme on your Sapphire ROM, this doesn't prove that BD is stealing code but rather just shows that your phone is now in a hybrid. For the most part just images have been replaced, but also parts of apps are changed for you now. For example, I don't believe that your sapphire MMS app has a black background option (if i remember correctly) but now that you replaced the MMS with my Luna version, it does have that option.

By installing my update.zip you are just pushing a few regular APK files to your phone that replace your originals. The only thing people have issues with usually is the framework-res.apk and services.jar files... And I don't know enough about Sapphire or eXtreme or those technicalities to comment on that.

EDIT: Also, I believe I will be porting over my newest build of Luna Theme to Sapphire in the coming days, so keep in touch and stay tuned in...

Who should I contact Blackdroid? Would he actually be honest? Now I did run his Throms awhile ago and they did work just fine, I choose to support other developers now. Interesting that Bgills GreenMetal theme makes Sapphire boot loop.

BTW I used this theme on a Chaos Rom before, really great job!

All this means is you got lucky applying a theme targeted for another ROM onto Sapphire. I personally would wait until icculusX does a proper port to Sapphire, for the reasons he has stated above.

And please do not launch into another discussion of BD/UD. Thank you.

FSRBIKER - No offence, but don't be a tard. Your tone is annoying. I am being kind in explaining to you how themes work. Yes you can talk to BD or the creator of Sapphire to work things out under the table instead of causing more issues on DF. I suggest you flash every ROM and every opposite theme out there... You will find, as pdroid said, that you might get lucky sometimes with themes working on ROMs they were not meant for. Some work, others put you in a boot loop, others force close a lot... It's called chance.

BTW, what the heck is throms?

My tone is annoying, whatever. A Thromer is someone who themes an existing Rom makes some other changes but then calls it his own without giving proper credit.

I'll drop it, the theme is great. I sent the guys from Sapphire a message so they can look into it or not.

guys we've all been here for the initial though. no need to charge people and flame people when you don't need to. All the devs out there are only trying to make OUR phones run better. We should be thanking them, not bashing them.

agreedd.... not like blackdroid is charging us for it... although the people he sells adds to for his site probably dont appreciate sponsoring ganked software

MOD PLEASE REMOVE THIS ANNOYING THREAD...

It is pointless, and you people are close minded. Thromer? Please don't make up words...

Close the thread, the only people being closed minded are those that still believe BD develops his own work. Just maybe he is now but he has been caught multiple times before. Btw I did not make up the word thromer.

I wanted to post in this thread simply because I believe it is important to voice my views on this matter.

On the matter of whether or not other hackers/developers/whoever take what sapphire has done and reuse it, claiming the work as their own, the official view of sapphire is that although it may not be the most honest thing to do, there is also nothing actually wrong with doing so.

Since joining the Android Homebrew community (as I like to call it, since android dev community is too general and includes app developers), I have noticed a lot of arguing about "this dev stole this other dev's work" and whatnot, and feel that a lot of people don't really understand what "Open Source" truly means.

There is nothing in the GPL that says that you MUST give proper credit when using someone else's source. It is typically a courtesy, but not a requirement, and anyone who gets upset when this doesn't happen obviously hasn't released very much open source code before. It happens a lot. Mostly not even on purpose. It's just with open source, at what point has one person made enough modifications to declare their work their own, and how many generations of code do you have to go through before you start dropping off names from the list of people who have worked on it?

I know some people get upset because they feel that people who reuse the original developer's code are stealing (through asking for donations themselves), but I can honestly say that is a load of crap. I put in way more hours on open source development then I can guarantee I will EVER get paid for. That's not why I do it. I develop for open source because I believe in it and I love using what I develop as well as having others use it. People shouldn't be in open source to make money, because it's not really a winning business model. Just look at google. Sure, they open source a LOT of stuff, but some things they have to keep closed, because if they didn't, then there would really be no reason to pick them, as others could release the exact same product. Don't get me wrong, the Sapphire team really appreciates any donations we receive, but we also don't get upset if we don't meet a "quota" or some such crap. This is about the fun, not about the money.

I guess what I'm saying is that it just seems like a whole lot of drama. I felt I should post this because I'm the developer for Sapphire and therefore wanted to state the official opinion on this matter.

Our official opinion is: Sapphire is open source for a reason. That means people can use it as they please for better or for worse, but we will not start flame wars about it or call people out or any of that. Everything that is created by sapphire is free for use under GPL, as well as anything on the sapphire website is free for replication under the FDL.

Of course, there is the question of whether people reuse our work but don't make their source code available, which would be in violation of the GPL, but we do not have the resources nor the will to argue about that anyway.

So in the end, I would ask that people stop arguing about this because it is bound to happen by the nature of Sapphire and Open Source. I personally am honored when people copy my work, and don't waste time getting upset over whether or not they credit me, and would ask others to do the same. That's not to say I don't joke about it on occasion, but come on people, no need for arguing.
