I don't know what is causing you issues but I can guarantee it isn't a virus... as there are NO confirmed viruses for Android.

whats a factory reset?

It's a step that resets the device back to it's default factory settings, erasing user data and fixing most issues the device will encounter that soft resetting doesn't address.

It's menu > settings > privacy > factory data reset

ensure your contacts/calendar are syncing with Gmail before you do

menu > settings > accounts & sync > google

You'll have to redownload your apps from the market though (it keeps a history of your downloads, so it's not that big of a deal.)
