HTC Thunderbolt Release Date

I'm praying tomorrow, I have surgery on Friday on my left hand and wrist and was hoping to have this new gadget to play with while I recover

In theory, if it is released tomorrow we would be able to order tonight at 3 am EST correct? Or do phones normally go up online at 7 am EST?

You are right. There is no difference in functionality. The Droid name is just branding. It will be called the HTC Thunderbolt rather than the Droid Thunderbolt.

so basically it's a droid but doesn't have droid in the name? i don't see a problem with that. as long as it does what the incredible can do and then some i'll check it out the day it's released and do a lot of thinking from there.

"Android" is the name of the Google OS. "Droid" is a Verizon brand name (licensed from Lucas Arts) that they give to their phones. That's all.

Thank you for clearing this up. I just had this discussion with someone yesterday who swore up and down that the TB was not a Droid. I tried explaining Droid comes from Android which is the OS and just a brand name but they all are on Android OS thus all Droids, it's just instead of Droid TB its HTC TB. Men..they don't listen when they think they know something!!

I was on the phone with vzw last night talking to customer care about an unrelated issue (billing) and it was very loud in the background , so I half heartily asked him " what's all the madness in there about , did you guys announce a new phone or something ? " ( I was playing dumb as if I had no idea about the 'bolt ) . His reply to me verbatim was " yes , we were just given weird on a new phone launching called the "Thunderbolt" . I said " really , when does it launch , when can I get it , I have an upgrade available ? " . He responded to me " we weren't given an exact date , but were advised they were in the corporate stores and in the .com stock and that we need to be prepared in the next couple days for mass ordering and told how to handle the first 4 g device . When I asked him when he thought it would officially release he again confirmed no set date , but told me he has been with vzw for 6 years and when they are told something in this fashion , about a device , it typically has launched within 48-72 hours . So again I called about my bill , and got inside info on the fly from the horses mouth . Let's hope he's correct !

I'm still thinking that there's a possibility of a silent launch tomorrow or a last minute announcement.

As I stated many pages ago there might be some logic in slowly adding 4G phones to an untested network. What I mean by untested is there was no way for VZW to see what the network would do with an influx of thousands and thousands of newly activated 4G handsets. If they gradually ramp up it won't overload the system all at once and they will have time to tweak it if necessary.

Again, my mindless speculation.

One thing to note that on VZW that Droid in the name has some extra meaning. In the past if the phone had Droid in its name then it didn't come with BING. Examples Droid Incredidble or Droid X no bing. Samsung Fascinate gets BING.

Not sure if that still holds true.

That's actually not right. All Droids are Androids but not all Androids are Droids.

Ok. So what's the difference. They both run Android. The only difference I see is the user interface..motoblur vs htc sence? I was always under the impression that Droid was a brand name and can be used at Verizon's discretion.

Best inside scoop in a while. Hope it's true.

It is under Verizon's discretion, but if they don't call it the Droid ___ then it's not a Droid. It's just an Android OS powered phone. Technicality more than anything else really. For instance, they didn't label the Thunderbolt the Droid Thunderbolt so calling it that would technically be incorrect.
