How to tell if the ESN number is Good?

My droid got wet and I need a new one. Found a guy that has one for sale on craiglist.

I keep hearing about esn numbers. How do I tell by looking at the phone if I will be able to activate this phone or not? Anything else I should specifically look for?

Thanks

You can call Verizon with the ESN number and ask them if it can be activated. However, it may be available now only because it hasn't yet been reported lost, stolen or damaged. People have been scammed on Craigslist before by users who sell them a device with a clean ESN, than immediately report it lost and get a new phone through insurance, and you are screwed trying to get it activated. I would never buy a used phone through Craigslist. At least with eBay you have user ratings to check and some recourse through eBay to get your money back depending on how you paid. (although even that is risky).

I assume you don't have insurance on yours? The Verizon insurance does cover water damage.

Pm me the esn Ill run it through the lost or stolen database..

And no I cannot look up accounts or give any info regarding accounts all I could tell you is whether or not the esn is good. :)

I bought my droid from a dude on craigslist, and he stayed with me while I activated it, then took my money. Overall a very satisfying experience. (except for the 50 miles each way I had to drive to get the damn thing! :) )

I'm thinking of doing the same thing for a droid x. What procedures do I have to take to activate it before payment?

Just have the guy meet you at a verizon store and activate it with him there, then pay the seller.

Is there a way of doing it without going to a verizon store? A potential x I might get is at a small phone place that sells for multiple companies.

Anywhere as long as it can be activated before you hand over the cash.....

This is the first time I've ever seen someone who bought a Droid on Craig's List and didn't get ripped off.
