hot spot or wifi?

I am a little confused about these terms. As I understand it you can use your phone as wifi by connecting it to your laptop, so you use verizon as your wifi hook up and there fore you can use your laptop where ever you can use your phone, is that correct? I have been able to hook up the phone to my own wifi in the house but I am more curious about "hot spot" is that the same as what I was describing above?

how do I ?

Thanks ok thats clear now how do I go about getting it set up and working, I've tried a couple of time but the phone does not recognize any devices. (ie my laptop). Does it have to be hooked up by the usb cable? or is ther something I'm missing.

I have a droid x, i have been experimenting with something called padnet, is that the correct app for creating a hotspot

Nope. The included hotspot app if you want to pay, otherwise root and use the wireless tethering app from the google code repository of the market. There is some controversy over tethering at the moment, tgough, so proceed at your own risk.
