My 13 year old has an HTC Imagio but if she had a droid she would want facebook, a cool SMS messaging app, cool backgrounds to change daily :), mixzing to listen to music, an app to create ringtones from those MP3s, a game or 10 LOL...she would be able to download anything additional in Market that was free but would need my approval for purchases...of course, there would be apps that I would want her to have...my daughter has had a phone about 3 years and is very responsible - if we run into discipline issues (which is very seldom), the phone is the first to be suspended and our attitude and behavior immediately improve.

A droid may not be right for everyone - yes, even adults...but KUDOS to you for getting one for your daughter for all the reasons you mentioned and more!

Deffinately check out the family control features from verizon. Family locator is 9.99 a month or load in the google maps latitude on her phone before you send it. Then you can see where she is all the time also. Verizons usage controls let you control her usage time of day and everything so shes not laying in bed at night playing with the phone instead of sleeping. Very useful tools to help keep the kida in line. My 11 year old has a simple phone but because at times my kids are at home alone and we don't have a landline. I could never leave them without a way to call in an emergency. And a 10 dollar add a line is much better then a thirty dollar land line.

Funny, I don't remember the OP asking for opinions about raising his daughter, just about setting the phone up.
My kids, 10 & 11, have had phones for 2 years. Originally got them so I could let them run around the neighborhood like we all did as kids with less worry. (Them having phones actually prevented a kidnapping last summer.)
Given that you aren't going top be there to help with the problems that will arise, I'd make sure you know everything you put on the. Try to create app conflicts if possible, so you can make sure they don't happen to her. (Things like that happening really irritate my daughter.
Like was previously stated, you need insurance, a case, and Mobile Defense. Chances of a phone like the Droid getting stolen are pretty good, add in a bunch of kids, and...
Maybe hook her up with some bluetooth headphones as well.

A few must haves-
Scientific calculator
Astro
Cherry RPlayer
Color Note
Droid lite
FxCamera
Handcent
Not Call Log
Pandora
Picsay
Ringdroid
Smart Vibrator

Good luck.

Do you know if she'll have 3G service in this remote area?

wow a Droid for a 12yr old.

That is quite the gift. There really is no way I can think of to setup the Droid for her. The phone really does differ for each user so just teaching her how to use it will be helpful enough, i mean you already got her the phone and the monthly charges that come with it.
