My name is Vanessa, and I can definitely understand the concern regarding the brightness of these buttons. I regret that the current software does not allow you to change the brightness of them. I apologize for any inconvenience that this may cause. I am hoping that the next software update will address this issue. I have reviewed this information in further detail below:
According to the internet, these buttons turn on & off based on the light conditions. If its bright in the room the button lights go off.

This program provides an online trade-in service where you have the option of:
• Receiving a VZW Gift Card, or
• Donating to HopeLine, which supports victims of domestic violence.
Using the self-serve website, you can determine the value of your device, submit a trade-in request, and track the status until the VZW Gift Card is received.
At the trade-in website, you can:
• Appraise to determine the value of the wireless device.
• Accept the option to receive a VZW Gift Card or donate to HopeLine.
• Arrange for shipment of the appraised wireless device to the VZW Trade-In Support Center.

Please note, you should not submit devices that are to be returned under Verizon Wireless' Return/Exchange Policy, Certified Like New Replacement program, Certified Pre-Owned program, Asurion Insurance claim or Warranty/Extended Warranty program. If a device listed above is submitted, it will not be returned, and you will be charged full retail value of the phone.
