Hard Key Backlight after ota update

Mine comes on for a few minutes and than goes out. But If I leave it in the multimedia docking station it stays on all the time. I sort of like when it comes on in dark or dem lighting.

Mine seems to come on more when I am in a place with dark lighting. When I'm at work which is really bright lighting, it doesnt come on. Hopefully they will fix this problem sooner than later.

The light sensor isn't sensitive enough it would seem anymore? (Or never was very sensitive and the lights just shut off after so many seconds) I can get them to shut off if I make sure the sensor is pointed DIRECTLY at a 60watt bulb from 4" away but turn it to a 45 degree angle and they turn back on...

Message Body: How do I fix the super bright hardkey lights? they have become

extremely bright and annoying...they are also draining the battery

really fast.

Dear Xan,

My name is Vanessa, and I can definitely understand the concern regarding the brightness of these buttons. I regret that the current software does not allow you to change the brightness of them. I apologize for any inconvenience that this may cause. I am hoping that the next software update will address this issue. I have reviewed this information in further detail below:

According to the internet, these buttons turn on & off based on the light conditions. If its bright in the room the button lights go off.

How to turn off hard button lights

It's not elegant, but I found a way to turn of the lights on the hard buttons that seem to stay on after the Gingerbread update. Here's how:

  1. Set the Display Brightness to zero. Don't worry, zero is dim but not blank.
  2. Turn off the phone
  3. Turn on the phone
  4. The hard button lights will illuminate at first, but then the Display Brightness will kick in and the screen will dim and then the lights on the hard buttons will go out (even in low light condition).
  5. You can now adjust the brightness as you please and the buttons should stay dark.
There a number of Apps and Widgets that will turn the lights back on, such as the widget Screen Off FX. So you will need to experiment some.

As I said this is not elegant, but is does seem to work. i wish I could find an App to reboot with one button, but I can't find one. Hopefully this will stimulate someone to find a better solution. I use my phone as my night clock and I can't have those buttons lit all night. So this works for now.

Follow-up: Plugging your phone into the charger will turn on the lights again. My main issue is I want the lights off at night while I'm using the phone as a night clock. Here's what I do. Keep in mind, if the phone is plugged in you can't reboot the phone. So here's the technique:

  1. Just before I want to turn on the night clock (App Digital Clock or Gentle Alarm) - Set the Display Brightness to zero
  2. Turn Off Phone
  3. Turn On Phone
  4. After the phone starts to boot (I wait until the Droid Circle thing starts going) plug in the phone to the charger
  5. Let it fully boot (the hard key lights will come on at first, but then the display brightness will dim and the lights will go out
  6. Turn on the your music App if you use it at night
  7. Turn on the night clock App
  8. Good night!

Good looking out. Its sort of a pain to do but it works. Thanks for sharing. Now I can watch my movies at night without that blinding light in my face.

I have another solution. I use Gentle Alarm by mobitobi ($2.80) for my night clock and it can kill the hard button lights. It has a bunch of features to gently wake you up, but I only use the night clock, which is terrific. You can select the background, font, brightness and more. But the issue here is that it has a feature under its "night display" settings that allows you to kill the hard button lights. Go to Settings, Night Display and make sure that "Soft button Lights" is not checked. At first I thought it wasn't working, but here's how to make it work after you have made sure the setting "Soft Button Lights" is not checked:

  1. Activate Gentle Alarm (press the icon)
  2. Select "Night Display"
  3. Turn Off the screen by pressing the power button
  4. Turn On the screen by pressing the power button
  5. Voila. The hard button lights are off. You can now go back to the home screen and activate other programs and the hard button lights will stay off, until you trigger something that turns them on again.
So it can be done. Someone should create a widget or App to turn off the hard button lights. in the meantime, It may be worth $2.80 to get them them off right now.
