Newbie question. I want to try handcent but want to know if I don’t like it, can I just delete it and the stock app will default back?

Yes that is correct. You will actually get notifications from both programs. If you decide you like handcent then you will need to go into the settings inside the stock messaging app and turn off notifications.

As wilderside said - you can uninstall the Handcent app if you don't like it...you can uninstall thru the Market or thru the phone settings - applications - manage applications - find the app, open, click uninstall...
