GPS not in status bar

The only time I see an icon for my GPS being on in the status bar is when I have an app running that's using it.
Is this normal? I'd like to know if I left it on by accident and it's draining my battery.
Also my GPS toggle widget doesn't work anymore.

Yes it's normal and it's not using battery unless you see the icon.
