I know this is old hat to many of you but it was a daunting task for a senior citizen. Fortunately, there are many good resources on rooting, installing recovery, doing a backup and finally flashing the ROM. It worked as it was supposed to and I am now running Eclipse 2.3 and no longer have all those pesky Verizon apps that I don't want and never use.
