The easiest method would be to use z4root. It is a one click app that will root your phone. I will post a link for download for you in a moment but be warned, after rooting your device you will have much more control over it. Make sure you do a lot of reading before doing anything new and if you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask. There are lots of people willing to help. Ok so that's my schpeal. Be back with your link.

There's the download link. Download it from your phone and then go to settings/applications/and check off unknown sources, then click development and check off USB debugging. Then find the apk file on your SD card and install it. Open it up and choose permanent root. It will take between 30 seconds and a few minutes and the phone will reboot when its done. Also you might want to put your phone in airplane mode before using the app, it will speed up the process.

It says permanent so if we get ota update can I still do it? Want to root but the more I read the more confused I get... I would just like to do it for the themes mainly I really like its have my phone as custom as I can using launchers right now and it gives some of that but I would like a lot more control of what I can actually change. The method u gave sounds so easy u don't need a computer?

you are correct, no computer is required. however, it should be known that flashing themes is an advanced operation (made more difficult by the fact that there are very few themes for stock, so you will usually have t flash a rom first) you will need to do a lot of reading to make sure you don't screw anything up. also you won't need access to a computer to root, but you should at least have one at your disposal in case you need to do an sbf flash.

Do I need to make a backup first if so how?

Sent from my DROIDX using DroidForums

you can't do a full backup before rooting as root is required to do so. but you should do a backup before doing anything drastic like removing bloatware or flasing a rom or theme. that way you have a safety net in case you screw up or need to get an update.

I understand your concerns. I just made the decision to root a few days ago. It has been totally worth it so far.
