Factory Restore before installing Gingerbread...yes or no?

OK, so I read on the Verizon Wireless website that everyone should factory restart their phone before installing Gingerbread onto their X2. Is this really necessary...or would we be fine just installing the update?

(Speaking of Gingerbread...still haven't gotten it...but that's a different thread.)

i would err on the side of caution and do a factory reset, and if you have any frozen bloat you need to SBF then should probably still do a factory reset. Id rather do the reset and have to reinstall a few apps then get bricked because of some stupid conflict.

I would imagine it depends on what you had installed on your phone before you updated that determines if and when your device sees an impact, I really don't know for sure I just think its always better to be cautious with such an expensive device

You have a good point...now for the more interesting question...HOW? Up until 2 months ago, I never had any form of Android phone...so I don't really know how to do it. When I get the message to download & install the Gingerbread, do I cancel, factory reset ,and then Install? And how exactly do I factory reset? I feel obtuse asking all this ....but this is my first time doing this, so I'm still learning, sort-of-speak. Thanks for any help you can provide.

I didn't wipe before installing the rooted version. Strangely enough, it did a full-reset during the install. Wasn't expect that.

Power down phone
Hold power and volume down until you see 'fastboot'
Press vol down until you see android recovery then press vol up once
press volume down to factory reset and press power button to select

I did a sbf, a reset, then the rooting and bootstrap, updated and reset again lol

But if I do a factory reset wont that make my phone not "remember " the update? Since it was not part of the original setup will I have to wait to see the update again? I just don't wanna reset after notification and end up having to wait longer for another OTA notification

That's another thing I thought about. I think what I'm going to do is when I get the OTA notification, I'm going to tell it to wait for 12 hours, then call Verizon's 611 and get them to help me reset the phone and get the update going. I'm too technology-stupid, and I'm afriad if I do it myself, I'm going to end up screwing up the phone.

I'm on the rooted GB and did not wipe, have not had anything go wrong yet..

I can't get my phone to do the factory reset. but turning it off and back on fixed the music issue. Still want more home screens. Any help on this?

How do you know if you have any frozen bloat?

You have to manually freeze all the bloat so if you don't know anything about it you don't have any frozen. Unless someone else is messing with your phone

Downloaded and installed the update last night without doing the factory reset. No changes to the home screen icons, downloaded apps, wallpaper etc. No return to factory defaults as I expected.
