droid pro sleep issues

Ok I just got the phone the day before yesterday and I love it so far other than the battery life but that's understandable. Anyways I've tried putting the screen setting to always on but that hasn't worked. My screen turns off automatically when im in the middle of doing something, I've also noticed if I place my finger anywhere along the top of the screen it goes into sleep mode which it doesn't make any sense why that would be a shortcut to sleep mode when the button is right there. Im gonna assume there's something wrong with the phone but I figured I'd check here first to see if anyone knows what I'm talkin about and whether or not it's an easy fix. If anyone can help me out I'd appreciate it, thanks.
