Droid on 4G?

So this is different than when iPhones went from 2g to 3g with the same phone? And don't I hear all the time about AT&T phones jumping seamlessly from 2g to 3g?

Having just signed a 2 year contract to get this Droid, I find it intolerable to think I would not be able to use it if/when they put into use the 4G network. Hard nut to swallow..

The first iPhones only had GSM & Edge (2g), no 3g capabilities when released in June 2007. A 3g version was introduced in July 2008. 3gs in June 2009.

Start practicing for that nut...

If you time it right, selling your old phone on ebay will soften the blow. I only had my Omnia about 10 months, sold it for $160. After fees my Droid only cost about $55.

Well, seeing as mine only cost $99 after rebate, I guess that's not bad. But without a plan upgrade - wouldn't we have to pay full price (what - maybe 5-6 hundred?) for a new 4G phone?

Worrying way before I should be - cuskit

When 4G comes out (and a 4g Droid to go with it) go into your VZW store and say, "Hey I want to get that phone through contract extension." If you don't mind adding a couple more years to your plan, you get the phone on discount price. Or else ask about early upgrading, it's an extra $20 but with a new phone it'll save you a few hundred dollars...

I'm just gonna enjoy my 3g Droid for now.... no sense in causing an ulcer worrying about 4g and compatibility... I'm sure when the 'new' network rolls out VZW will have incentives to purchase compatible devices.

Live in the now, love what ya got! Tech will always have something 'better' on the way. It's inevitable.

Verizon will start phasing in 4G in 2010. They are already testing, and we'll see it in a number of major markets the first year. To do this they will need phones that speak 3G and 4G, plus probably 1x. So, in the next few months we will start seeing phones introduced with 4G capability and over the next two years as people upgrade their phones, we'll have the capability to handle 3G, 4G, or 1x depending on where we are. So - your Droid2 or whatever they call it should do 4G. There is speculation that one of the first 4G capable phones on Verizon will be the iPhone (boo) but it would also have to support 3G and 1x.

I read an article in consumer reports that 4G (LFE) will be phased in for the netbooks and aircards over the next year then the phones will follow. It is up and running and being tested in several markets right now.

I was under this impression as well.

Spoke with a senior tech over the phone about an issue the other night and he tol me that exact thing. He also said that they have it up and running in certain markets and they also have some phones running on it to test.

Guys, think of it this way. Those of us on a two year contract will be spared the initial 4G failures, lack of service, and performance issues that are sure to be experienced in the first year of operation. By the time we upgrade, 4G will be up and running just perfectly for us. :) 3G won't be going away in the meantime, and 3G service is doing very well for me so far.

Chugging along.

I totally agree. It's like buying anything the first day out. Problems, failures, etc.

However, one of my biggest complaints about Verizon (and any other subscription based company - like AT&T, Dish TV etc.) is their lack of 'loyalty' to those of US who have been loyal customers. I've been with Verizon since they were Airtouch. What's that now - 12-14 years? I still have to sign a two year contract every time it's up. When I decided I had to have my Droid phone, I had four months left on my contract. Now, here I am wanting to spend big bucks on a phone, upgrading my service with more allowed text and picture messages, AND now having to sign up for the additional $30/mo data feed. And what does Verizon do? I get zapped because I'm making changes before the end of my contract. I did an early renewal so I got some sort of 'deal' for that. The phone was $300 but I can get the $100 rebate if I send in the bar code off the box (which I just did). You'd think if I want to spend MORE money with them, and do it EARLY, they might give ME a break, but no.

I realize they're all the same, but that doesn't mean I can't complain about it. :)

So by the time my new two year contract is up, I'm sure this now new 4G service will already be old hat, and I'll then get in on whatever is hot at the time (and then watch that go south - quickly). Ya gotta love it!

And here I thought I was the only airtouch person left, remember those days? I've been with verizon just as long, would like to see a customer loyalty program as well

My plan was up for renewal on March 22, '10, yet I was eligible for my "Free every Two" on Nov 22, 09. They allow I guess at least four months early with no penalty. You should not have been zapped. I paid $199.00 and the got $100 of that back with my rebate.

Was the date you referenced for renewal of your Contract date or the date you were eligible for an upgrade? The two are not the same. As I just pointed out.
