Dont walk RUN to get Pro Zoom 5x camera

So I tried Camera Magic and PRO Zoom Camera 5X after reading this thread. After taking quite a few pictures with each, here is what I found:

  • PRO Zoom Camera's user interface is great, much more polished than Camera Magic. Quick and easy

  • Camera Magic starts up a bit faster, but not by much and it force closes alot though - buggy.

  • PRO Zoom gave me much better control over my pictures than Magic. I could change whitebalance, Scene mode, effects and flash on my Droid with PRO Zoom Camera. Can't with Camera Magic

  • I LOVE the use of the volume buttons to take a picture and zooming with the trackball with PRO Zoom Camera. Soooooo convenient. Not in Camera Magic. In fact it didn't even let me preview the zoom!

  • Finally the post processing features of PRO Zoom are simply awesome. I can adjust brightness, contrast, add star bursts, clipart, text and even turn the pic into a damn Comic book picture! Boo yah!

Simple really - PRO Zoom Camera rocks for my Droid - a great way to spend my hard earned $1.99.....:motdroidhoriz: :motdroidhoriz: :motdroidhoriz:

thanks for some of the tips. I didnt even realize alot of this. Money well spent.

This is all great and I am happy that the apps are working for you guys. I still think it is sad that the pics taken are so grainy. I really hope there is a software solution to that issue and it is not a hardware issue. I love this phone and if it would actually take decent lower light pics (like night shots indoors with the lights on) then it would be great.

So far this is the only real substandard part of the package.

Eric,

Have you tried the Scenes in PRO Zoom? There is one called "Night" which I find helps take low light shots.

The Graininess has to do with the ISO value of the image sensor or the light sensitivity of the image hardware itself on the camera. Kinda like using ISO 100 film in a dark place.

So I had some more time today to play with PRO Zoom Camera. I have to say it is simply awesome! You can take great pics but then do sooooo many things with then after you take them.

See my creative masterpieces below in the attachments. :D

Enjoy!

Ya,, I just talked to the dev of camera fx as well... they will have a version droid ready within 3 days. From what I have heard that is the best camera on android....

Hi Slammer,

Thanks for the info! I havent tried the software yet though I think I will have to.

whats the track record of Camera FX..... based on what you know and the promises you've heard, how will it be the best?

Effects are nice, but first its all about the quality of the basic picture and speed.. then we can talk effects.....

I have the latest update to the Droid "2.0.1"

ok.. I hate to be a killjoy, but I installed "and paid" for PRO Zoom Camera 5X.

Although it had a few mods to trick the picture once it was done.... none of which I would actually use... I use Picsay for all that stuff.

I want an app that takes "better" pics than the stock... I didn't find that here.

The zoom will go up to 5X.. however based on how close I was able to zoom, my estimation of the stock camera is it goes to approx 6X "as compared to the 5X of the other app". While not as fast on the zoom, I do think the stock camera zooms more.

As far as speed... unless you choose to autosave, its actually slower than the stock camera because while its busy telling you its saving to the card, you could be taking a picture.
This app was probable a good alternative before the update... but the update really sped up the stock camera.

Since the biggest challenge for this camera is inside shots,
I only tested it with inside indoor shots across my living room with my TV in the distance.... Florescent and incandescent lights were on in the room... the white color balance seemed about equal with both apps with no complaints.

The Focus I liked better with the stock app as well as handling of dark shades such as my black dog sitting next to me on my couch.

I was disappointed and so uninstalled the app.

due to all the excitement about this.... I was hoping for more.

The pictures you guys are posting doesn't show the quality. You are all uploading the resized "low resolution" version. I don't know if your taking 3MB shots or if the place you are uploading your pictures to are resizing them, but either way it makes it pointless for quality comparison.

To see the true quality of each picture, I want to see the full 5MB version of the image taken. Only when you see the full sized version can you see the detail (and grain) taken from the shot.

They all look outstanding when you "shrink" them.

Judging from the pictures provided so far, I honestly can't tell a difference in quality between the app examples and the stock camera.

I also use Picsay for my editing needs, so effects is not a priority for me. Like t he guy above me posted, its the quality of the captured pictures that we need improved. You can always put them on a PC and use other editing software like Photoshop if you want hardcore effects.

ISO 100 in a dark place should just be darn dark. ISO 1600 in a dark place will brighten it up a lot, but will give you major grain. When I see the pictures that my Droid takes I always thought it was selecting a Higher ISO then it should be. To me it seems to take High ISO shots instead of selecting a lower ISO value.

EDIT:
I took the plunge on picked up Pro Zoom 5X. The price was right on it :) Will try and play with it more later when I am more awake. I do wish they had an option to toggle the volume controls for your zoon instead of having the slider. Though the slider is not that bad either.

I honestly find this app light years ahead of what i get from the stock app. maybe maybe camera is messed up? This app takes much better point and shoot shots inside then the stock app. at least for me. not blurry and faster.

Did'nt your mama tell you the difference between digital and optical zoom.

Optical zoom uses a series of glass or plastic lenses to bend light and apparently get you closer to your subject.

Digital zoom magnifys the existing image formed by the camera lens. Trouble is it manifies everything including the graininess.

Unless someone comes out with an actual hardware lens accessory the zoom is what it is.
