Contacts - where are they kept?

Is there a way to delete all contacts without resetting the phone? Can it be located by a file explorer?

Are these the contacts on your phone or on your Google account? Or both?

Open up your contacts and then the press the softkey settings and click on contacts to display. Select the device and and remove them (probably one at a time).
