Clockwork Recovery not working???

I am trying to do my first ROM exchange. I installed the FREE version of the Clockwork Mod Recovery program and followed the instructions to Reboot into Recovery. The first couple of times I did that I got a screen that suggested wiping the data/factory reset/ which I did. Then I selected the file for the new JRummy ROM from the SD Card and then said OK to the question about "are you really wanting to do this" and waited....Yes, I forgot the step of pressing the power button twice, and then it eventually rebooted back in the stock ROM after a funny set of ICONS that flashed briefly on the screen of a box with an arrow coming out of it (simulating unpacking a zip file, I imagine?) and a bar ICON at the bottom the showed about 30% progress until the next ICON (an error indicator, I suppose) that looked like a Yield sign with an exclamation point on it. Since it flashed so briefly I preformed the same set of steps several times...still forgetting the power button double click..while I tried to see the very brief ICONs that were being flashed.

This failed for the obvious reason, I forgot one step. But I did finally see enough of the ICONS to record them.

But, still oblivious to the error I was making I tried to install the Ultimate Droid ROM, with the same results.

Then I discovered my error. But by then the software was no longer working properly and was skipping the step that allowed me to select the zip file on the SD Card and was just skipping merrily across to the flashing ICONS and eventually rebooting in the old ROM.

At this point feeling that the Recovery program had been corrupted I un-installed the whole shooting match...except for the two ZIP packages for the two ROMS and then re-installed it...still it skipped the selection portion of the sequence and it still does that after two more attempts to un install the program and re install it.

So I never got to try it with the missing step inserted.

So I have just un installed the Clockwork Mod Recovery program for the 5th time and am just happy that the original ROM is still working and no damage done.

I guess I am better off than some,l but I think I am through trying to get another ROM since I still havent any idea why I want one anyway..

On the droid x you need a program called droid x bootstrap. This is the program you need to load custom rims, its in the market dev is koush. Get that bootstrap and you will be good to go.

That worked and I have the Jrummy ROM installed now. But I have two questions that need answering.

First is there a way to get rid of the boot onto the menue with the tinny letters and directly into the front page instead of having to select reboot form the menu.

Second, when I turn off the phone and then plug in the charger it reboots...again to the little menu (made for younger eyes than mine) and I cannot turn it off while it is charging. I think this will slow my recharge.

It took me a while to figure out the use of the camera button and volume button as controls, where did I miss the instructions?

And sometimes when booting it presents a choice for starting a program that I didnt even request. The menu can be closed by just hitting the return button, but its a PITA every time I boot.

BUT...I like it if I can just get rid of the anomalies.

I can't get bootstrap to work with clockwork at all for some reason. I run bootstrap recovery, and its granted superuser permissions.. But If I download a rom from clockwork and select to reboot into recovery, it bypasses recovery like the bootstrap is not running or working properly... However, I experience where sometimes if I reboot the phone manually (or turn off/on) it throws itself into recovery like the bootstrap is in fact working, just doesn't throw itself into recovery after a reboot from clockwork.

What I've had to do is download something from clockwork, go to the bootstrap, select to reboot recovery, then manually find the rom in the clockworkmod folder. Not that big of a deal, but a lot of extra steps especially since it seems like others are getting it to boot into recovery with the boot strap running after downloading a rom from clockwork.

Is there anything more I need to do with bootstrap so that clockwork will work correctly in the future? I'm fully rooted with a custom theme at this time, just would like to know for future reference.

It may be confusing, but rom manager is almost completely ineffective on the DX. It is my understanding that koush wrote rom manager with unlocked boot loaders in mind. But since the D2 and DX both have locked boot loaders, rom manager has simply become a program that aids in downloading, but no longer is able to install.

The unfortunate news is you are doing it the only way possible as of now... downloading from internet or rom manager and then rebooting recovery through boot strap and then commencing with the install.

Because no DX is complete without custom rims and pirelli's. Ha ha
