Can preinstalled Apps be deleted from TB?

I am about to buy a Thunderbolt and one report is holding me back so I thought I would check it with people who know the device. I have been told that the device comes with lots of Apps that I know I do not want, and that these preinstalled Apps (1) take up battery juice in the background and (2) cannot be removed. Is this true?
I have been conducting a personal war with Feature Bloat, which seems to infect everything from Timex watches (see my review of the Timex HRM T5G 971 on Amazon) to cameras to remote control devices. Having a smartphone with many Apps that cannot be deleted and that take up both real estate and battery life would be a deal breaker for me so I hope you will tell me that my information about the Thunderbolt is wrong.

The only way they can be removed is if you root your phone. As far as affecting battery life it's minimal at worst.
