Can a cracked screen/digitizer cause a black screen?

This is on a Droid 1 (A855). Can a cracked screen/digitizer cause a black screen or is the display/lcd need replaced also? I guess the phone works fine if you know where to push to answer, etc so I guess the digitizer is working even though it is cracked.

If the screen wont come on, its the LCD. The digitizer is was gives the screen its "touch" function. So if it still responds to touch, the digitizer is fine.

Thank you. I figured as much. I was hoping that a crack in the digitizer might sometimes cause a software prob that make the screen go dark, oh well. Is there anything else I can try to resurrect the screen before buying both the digitizer and screen? - which it is probably not worth.
