How Can I Check If I Need Just a Screen, or the Whole Assembly/Digitizer?

Hello! The screen on my GS4 is cracked pretty badly (pics coming), and I need to fix it. How can I tell whether I need to buy a $10 screen, or a $75+ digitizer kit?! The price difference is obviously significant, and even though I've been reading around for a while, I still can't figure out which way to go.

My carrier is offering a $100 trade-in in on any device, as long as the screen is not cracked, and I reallyyy want to take advantage of this.

Dollar for dollar you are better of replacing both. The time and energy it takes to replace just the glass is crazy.... Not to mention chances are you'll damage the digitizer in the process

Yup, had a buddy who cracked his gs4 screen pretty bad and attempted to replace just the glass himself, he ended up breaking the whole assembly.
