Best way to make calls from asia?

Hi all,

I am going to asia in 2 weeks and I plan on only using my droid on WIFI in the hotel/starbucks etc.

To check in with people back home, what is the best way to make calls? I have been reading past threads and there seems to be conflicting advice, partially because things have changed in the past 6 months since some threads were created

so what is the current status? will skype work on wifi? is there something else?

does not work with skype, when you try to make a call through skype using google voice, the call will not complete because skype uses a +1-*** number and you can't control what number skype dials, you can put the skype number in your verizon FF list then it's free min through skype but not through GV, calling the other direction, skype uses a different number for incoming calls and you'd have to put that number into your verizon FF list also for free internaltional calling through skype

Nope. GV is not a VOIP solution by itself.

Skype will work on WiFi but the connection must be perfect...
You might wanna check out the pre-paid card offers and the rates they provide for calls to wherever you wanna call...
There's a lot of companies currently providing free VoIP to Cell phone/Land line calls ... just google it...
