Edit: Sorry, misspelling in the topic title. Should be Backup Phone. (Fixed :D)

When I installed ICS (through a download, not OTA), I basically lost everything no my phone. My texts, my contacts, etc. I eventually resynced everything with my Google and Facebook contacts but still, my old texts were lost.

My phone is not rooted. I know nothing about rooting phones. At the same time, I want to remain eligible for all VZ updates for my phone and I don't know how that works for rooted users.

I've tried the Verizon Backup Plus assistant, which did backup my contacts. Unfortunately, it did not backup my media, as I received some sort of connection error. I do not want to lose this data. I assume it also means texting history as well.

What are my alternatives?

Don't be scared by rooting... its really not as hard as it may seem at first... just follow instructions and it should be easy... and there are many benefits, and for your concerns, you can use Titanium Backup to backup all your stuff ... also you can use Voodoo rootkeeper to temporarily unroot if there were an OTA update available.

If you are not rooted, you can use SMS Backup & Restore to backup your text messages and MyBackup for everything else. MyBackup also backups your texts but SMS backup & Restore gives you more options for which texts you want to save.

I'm not rooted and use My Backup Pro. It works on non-rooted phones, although more options are available if you are rooted. According to their site:

What's supported on Android:
  • Application install files (If phone has root access, this includes APK+Data and Market Links)
  • Photos
  • Music
  • Videos
  • Contacts
  • Call log
  • Browser bookmarks
  • SMS (text messages)
  • MMS (attachments in messages)
  • System Settings
  • Home screens (including HTC Sense UI)
  • Alarms
  • Dictionary
  • Calendar
  • Music playlists
  • Integrated third party applications
