Another new droid memba

Well, I guess I bought my droid a week too early, regardless I like the phone. As with most devices I buy I eagerly rush to the "underground" scene for more control .. Here lies a couple of my questions.

It appears my phone has fw 2.1-update1. I've read users with 2.2 going back to 2.1? Why is this, 2.2 seems to be an all around faster/better version.

Is it possible to update to 2.2 and then root it?

What is sapphire? I've read some users having it, is it like an OS? or Browser or something.

1 - Some people are reverting because they've noticed issues with their phones on installing 2.2.

2 - I'm sure its possible to upgrade and then root, but there's also a file floating around that is from the (temporarily) delayed OTA that is already rooted (from Peter Alfonso).

3 - Sapphire is a ROM, like Cyanogen/JRummy/Bugless Beast. I think all ROMs are running some variant of 2.2 currently.
