Adding emoticons to text messages

From my previous posts, I'm still trying to get used to this phone. Since coming from the Bionic, I am used to having things in certain places. Well, the other day, I tried to put a smily face after the text I was going to send and I couldn't figure out how to do so. Any suggestions?

When your typing just hit the menu button and it will say insert smiley. Then it will give you a choice of inserts.

Related question: Is there any way to disable the graphic for smileys? Some of them are stupid and I'd rather it just show the text.
