A question about rooting

Well i'm new to the whole actual smart phone game and I have a seriously idiotic question what is rooting. I switched from a LG rumor when I went to Verizon. So, it's a epicly far jump. So be gentle please. :D

Root access on your phone is like administrator access on a pc. You can manipulate all files & add/delete things that a "user" can't.

All depends on what you want from your phone. I am rooted, have installed liberty rom, have no bloatware on my phone, have patched the 3g hotspot app, add the no throttle hack, etc. It can oe rather addicting, but a lot of fun.

Sounds awesome. What are the chances of messing the phone
EDIT: What's the best way to do this or a good simple guide?

Alright. Thanks for the speedy answers by the way and the lack of being flamed :P. My last question( I think) Does anyone have a link(s) to a good guide/list of useful or cool things to put on a rooted phone or basic needs? If its in the Rooting guide that got posted call me a idiot lol. Cramped on time with prepping a superbowl party sooo not much time to do this now or to read it.

EDIT: After a quick over at the guide Is it possible to save a backup of how my phone is right now and load it?

You cannot do full backup of your phone prior to rooting. You can do backups after you've rooted. The tutorial provided previously will show you how.
