4G a bunch of Hooey??

4G is going to take time to mature. Same thing happened when 3G was first launched.

But yeah, if/when you get good 4G service, it blows 3G out of the water.

We'll, I'm in Las Vegas and as you may know, we are an island in the desert, so to say. We have a definite boundary and you really can go from urban to outback in a few short miles from the core. It sounds like in areas of urban sprawl, like LA, NYC, Ft. Lauderdale, the issue with connectivity is less pronounced.

WHAT I DID SEE...In the core of Las Vegas, it works pretty good, I said pretty good because it is not flawless, 3g is 99.99% flawless here and I still think there are issues to be worked out with 4g...

SO...For all you lucky souls with kick a** 4g, I' glad for you!! Just wish us less than lucky souls some good fortune with 4g.

This is just one reporters opinion...

I have no doubt there are issues that need worked out with Verizons new 4g network. We had many issues last week with connectivity for starters... Maybe there are still issues in your area, and hopefully things will get better for you.

Stick with it though. I paid full price for my phone and last week when we were having all the issues I was having second thoughts like I'm sure many did. But I did a factory data reset and things have been great since. Depending on where I am I go between 4g and 3g with ease.

Custom roms is also something that makes this phone amazing...

I hope you stick with it because I know you will like it when things get ironed out! Good Luck!

USER ERROR.....

This is my thunderbolt talking...

My my, aren't you a text'er of few words...and all in caps none the less. LOL

It's difficult for me to accept the problem as USER ERROR, when one turns on a phone and has little to no control over what network parameters are used. It is after a TELEPHONE, one is suppose to just use it and not spend endless hours entertaining themselves with it.

Like I said, for those with great 4g service, count yourself lucky, because it is not perfect everywhere just yet. Get out of your routine area and it becomes very apparent.

I'm sorry that you're having issues, but this is going to be one of the fastest rollouts ever. Hopefully, you'll have full LTE coverage soon so you can sing its praises like we do!

4G is what sold me on this phone. The battery is weak and the phone is a little bigger than I'd like, but the SPEED... Oh my. I have strong 4G all over here and at work I get 25-40, yes 40 mbps speeds. I get 20-25 on my cable modem at the house. At work I've popped up the hot spot feature and I had 3 other phones getting 20mbps at the same time. I may be an exception since 4G is still pretty sparse, but I can't pass up 2yrs unlimited data at these types of speeds, even if the network gets a little slower as it saturates.

As much as I love this phone, there is no way you get 40mbps. Regarding cable access, unless you're spending a lot of money, you're not getting more than 10-15mbps. A T-1 is only 1.544 mbps and that's pretty fast for standard browsing and home cable networks do only a few times that speed, which is good enough for video, usually anywhere from 5-15mpbs for most consumer hookups that cost $20-50. 4G is noticeably faster than 3G. Not even close.

No disrespect but I know what I get, I do this for a living dancedroid

I live in an area that has a high concentration of AT&T DSL/Uverse users and almost NO Comcast users. I've asked my local reps a number of times why I get double the speeds at this house versus my old house. His answer is always the same, "not many customers on cable out here". I ran a test last night from three different website (multiple servers on each site) and got over 20 each time. Let me get another phone and I'll screenshot a speedtest on the Tbolt. Keep in mind I said that the MAX was 40, I'm averaging in the high 20s low 30s.

I'll try to get a screen shot for you. I'm hitting 28-32 as I type this.

*edit* it's funny how often I have to provide proof of these speeds, I need to start carrying permanent screenshots :)

I couldn't get a 40mbps at work today, probably due to time of day. I found one from this morning that is close though. Keep in mind that I work maybe 5 miles from one of the test servers and I'm in strong 4G coverage. As for home results, I get this pretty consistently. 4G really is that sick.

I almost felt dirty taking that picture with my D1 :(

42mbps.... upload? Something is extremely odd about those numbers.

No offense, I respect what you're saying but I've been dealing with the Internet since 1200 baud modems and am familiar too. Even VZW doesn't claim double digit upload speeds.

4G Phone Shootout: Verizon ThunderBolt Fastest by Far - PCWorld

Looking at RCN cable Internet access.... the $55 / month package

RCN New York City | High Speed Internet | Plans & Pricing

25mbps download and 2mpbs upload. As I said, something unearthly must be happening in your Thunderbolt to get more than 20 times the upload speed of wired broadband cable... unless perhaps the test might not be accurate? The first tip to me was an upload speed that is FASTER than download. Never seen them even come close to equal.

One more: Verizon Wireless announced its 4G LTE service in December. The new network gets average download speeds of between 5Mbps and 12Mbps.

The upload speeds are totally screwed. I read somewhere that the app isn't nearly accurate. If I run a browser based one I get around 2. I wasn't trying to pull an "I told you so", just wanted to let folks know that even with an unusually good cable connection at home my TB smokes it when I'm in strong 4G coverage. Of course the bandwidth isn't as good but hey you can't have it all :)

Salvageable thread title may be salvageable.

I cannot speak to the hiccups of being on the "4G" network in certain areas... but your 4G may in fact be "hooey". I did about 10 minutes worth of research on this, so if I'm totally wrong don't crucify me.

You're not on 4G. Nobody is. Not Sprint, not AT&T, not T-Mobile.... nobody. According to people who are probably smarter than me, the marketed 4G is much different than the real 4G. 4G is supposed to be peak download speeds of 100 Mbps for mobile applications, and up to 1 Gbps for fixed network systems. Apparently the cell carriers thought 4G sounded cool for this band of next gen phones, so they kinda "common word" changed the definition.

Me? I'm still on 3G in southeastern CT on my Tbolt, and it's still amazingly fast compared to what I'm used to. Oh, Linky---

Again, if these are false, don't crucify me... I just read it and got a laugh thinking this thread may, in fact, actually deliver lol.

LTE can be converted to True 4g (LTE advanced).. in time.. we will be seeing 100mbps on our handheld phones...

if your going to claim 4g, you need to be LTE at least.

Nice to see networking guys in here :)
