I don't know where there are more weenies right now: here, waiting for the 2.1 update, or over at the weather forum I belong to, going on about the possibility of a major, dual phasing winter storm for next weekend (possibly)
All I know is when it comes to stuff like this rumors are everywhere. At least the speculation on the weather forum is grounded in facts..or at least clear scientific data... (BTW, I am as eager for the 2.1 as the rest of you)
These are my theories on the update.
1. It will come sometime today, or within the next week.
2. We won't see it until mid summer....
As for the second one, let me explain. Anytime I have been involved in some sort of software/firmware update either directly, or indirectly the initially promised/posted/predicted release date is almost NEVER the date it rolls out. Years ago I worked in Customer Service/Field service for a laser printer manufacturer. They made printers with a decent reputation, but, some changes were needed to the firmware in the printers, so a new version of the program was being worked on, with a release date of January 30th of that year.... Customers were all a buzz, I took at least a dozen calls a day asking when the update was going to ship (it was on an EEPROM chip) The deadline came and went, it was changed to mid Feb, then early March, than April.. (you get the idea) My tech support guy was frustrated, because the program was done, bug free, and ready for install.... New printers were getting the updated program, the older models had to have the new EEPROM installed. This program was supposed to be better than the old version, doing away with some pesky bugs, and enhancing some other operations. My tech support guy had a bunch of the EEPROMs in his office, that he was supposed to distribute to the field techs for distribuition to their customers, everyone else was getting it shipped to them. Anyway, long story short: I left the company in October of that year, and the update did not go out until a week after I left..... So, don't get impatient waiting for this thing... we'll get it when we get it. Something similar happened when I was working 9-1-1 and the software company that made our CAD (computer aided dispatch) program was supposed to remotely update all systems running their program, I believe the date was in June.... the update didn't arrive until late August. In both cases the update was ready to go, but they took their time releasing it... No rhyme or reason, that's just how it goes.
Miami1683 seems to have an inside track on the info, so I guess we will get a heads up from him, but I still maintain that if an update was going out, the call centers would know, and somebody, in an unguarded moment would slip while on the phone with a customer. I bet that the Nexus One customers get updated first, since that is Google's "flagship" phone...us Droiders will have to wait.
