1G RAM vs 512MB, what's the difference?

I am using Droid 1, 256MB RAM. One major complaint is the speed. While I am looking to upgrade, I see phones with 1G of RAM vs 512MB.

In reality, what's the major benefit of having 1G (of RAM)? Let's say the number of apps I will be running may be the same as now while I have only 256MB. Please share your insights, especially the hidden benefits of having 1G of RAM. Thanks in advance.

TBH, I'm not sure you'd notice the difference.

I have the D3 which has the same processor as the Bionic and Razr, but 'only' 512MB of RAM.

Supposedly, the Bionic and Razr have DDR2 RAM as well.

The D3 is a great upgrade from a D1 and has a great support network IMO.
