Wa exactly is a ROM?

I know what it is in emulating for games, is it the same thing? So what would a rom do for my phone (i know there are many but like one example)

Also what is a sbf? And again what does it do for my phone?

Im new at the phone thing so please forgive my ignorance, I am very open to learning so expect alot of questions as I post.

ROM here is different than a emulator ROM. and an sbf file is a file to flash it vback to stock
