Uh, how do I shut this thing up?

I use Timeriffic to do exactly what you are trying to do...(it's free also). I have a setting to silence all rings/notifications during my work hours Mon-Fri (8:00am - 4:30pm) and enable vibrations for those and then to turn the ringers back up for phone/emails/txts after that.

NICE FIND!! I have to check that out. Man this phone and App market rocks!! And it'll only get better.
 
You don't need any special programs. Silent mode should do it. Either your phone is messed up or one of the settings is wrong.

I have my phone on silent mode 100% of the time and it doesn't make noise for calls or notifications. I also keep the media volume all the way down unless i'm watching something.

Of course you don't need it, but it's a handy app to have.
