The DroidForums STOCK Solutions Thread!

The following solutions are for those of you who have stock phones. We like to think of it as a survival guide and hope it will make your transition to the Droid a little easier. These are the questions we see over and over and thought it would be a good idea to put the resolutions all in one place.

GOOGLE EMAIL, CALENDAR, CONTACTS

HOW TO SETUP GMAIL TO CHECK YOUR POP3 ACCOUNTS:
  1. Log into GMAIL from a computer. You can perform these steps from the Droid's browser, but they're a little different and can be difficult to manage. So performing these steps from the PC is the easiest solution.
  2. Click on the Settings link in the upper right.
  3. Click on the "Accounts and Import" tab.
  4. Under the "check mail using POP3" section, click the "add POP3 email account" button.
  5. Enter your POP3 account's email address in the "email address" line provided in the popup window and click Next Step.
  6. Enter your username and password for this account. Google will attempt to automatically fill in your POP3 settings for this account. If you do not know these settings, you can try proceeding with what has been filled out. Sometimes a quick Google search will help you to identify what they are (search for your account's POP3 settings; ie: aol.com POP3 settings).
  7. While still on this window, we recommend selecting "label incoming messages" and then label them the email address for the account that you're adding. By doing so, you will create a folder (label) for each account that you add and when you receive mail on your Droid, you will know where it has originated from. If you select "archive incoming messages” (skip the Inbox), they'll still go to the label you created, but you won't get notified when the messages arrive on your Droid, because it's not hitting your inbox.
  8. Click Add Account.

You can also RETURN messages THROUGH those accounts, so it appears as if you're using, say, Outlook (or some fancy email client) instead of just checking your mail with GMAIL.
  1. Under the "send mail as" section, click the "send mail from another account" button.
  2. In the popup window, type the name you wish to be associated with the POP3 account and the email address and then click "next step".
  3. Select the "send mail through (yourdomain.com) SMTP servers. Doing so will prevent messages showing "[email protected] on behalf of [email protected]" when replying to messages.
  4. Enter your SMTP server information (use the information from the steps that you took to setup your POP3 account). You must make sure that you have the correct port number. Enter your username and password and select SSL if required (again, you can usually verify this information with a Google search).
  5. Click "Add Account".
If you HAVE to originate emails from your old email account, but you still want to use this method, you can set that "other" email account as your default:
  1. From GMAIL click the Settings link.
  2. Select the Accounts and Import tab.
  3. Under the Send Mail as section, select which account you want to be your default and all of your mail will originate from that account
HOW TO RESOLVE GOOGLE DUPLICATE CONTACTS:

1. Log into your Gmail account using your ID and password.
2. Click "Contacts" on the side of your email account and click the "Contact" list you want to delete duplicate contacts from. You can also select "All Contacts" to view all your Gmail contacts.
3. Place a check on the duplicate contacts. For example, if you have two contacts titled "John Peterson," select both of them.
4. Click "Merge Contacts" on the right panel of the contacts list. The duplicate contacts are merged into one contact that you can still use.

GOOGLE CALENDAR SYNC:

For a great explanation of the Google calendar sync functionality, go to this thread written by 640k, one of our moderators:

DROID Hints: Google Calendar Sync

HOW TO IMPORT OR ADD CONTACTS AND LIST BY LAST NAME:

Contact list by last name

Export contacts from Gmail
  1. Sign in to Gmail.
  2. Click Contacts along the side of any Gmail page.
  3. Click Export at the top of your Contacts list.
  4. Choose whether to export all contacts or only one group.
  5. Select the format in which you'd like to export your contacts' information.
  6. Click Export.
  7. Choose Save to Disk then click OK.
  8. Select a location to save your file, and click 'OK.'
Change the column headers so first name is last name and last name is first name

(skip step if you just want to import the contacts as is)

You can import your address books (from Outlook, Hotmail, Yahoo!, orkut, and other services) into Gmail.
  1. First, you'll need to format your contacts as a CSV file -- often times, address books exported from other mail providers are already formatted as CSV files. You can also create your own CSV file.
  2. Once you have a CSV file with all your contacts' information, import the file and transfer your contacts to Gmail. Note that you can only import up to 3000 contacts at a time. If you have more than 3000 contacts, you'll need to create multiple CSV files to upload.
Import into Gmail
  1. Sign in to Gmail.
  2. Click Contacts (located below your list of views) on any Gmail page.
  3. Click Import in the top portion of the Contact Manager.
  4. Click the Browse... or Choose File button and locate the CSV file you'd like to upload.
  5. Select the file and click the Import button.

HOW TO CONNECT PHONE TO PC WITHOUT USB:

Any way to beam camera photos to PC without USB connection?

There are a couple of solutions for this. RinTinTigger offers a way to mount your phone as a network drive: [HowTo] Wifi Mount your DROID

I just tried this and netdrive.com's free software won't work on my 64bit machine. 32 bit only.

Another free alternative is to spin up your phone as a web server using Phone Portal - Moto Phone Portal - Droid to PC Media Sync(and More) via WiFi

Websharing is another app worth checking out in the market. There is a free and a paid version

Looks like the solution used was "Picasa One Click Upload", a free market app.

If you have other solutions let me know and I'll add them here as alternatives.

HOW TO RESOLVE HELIX LAUNCHER - CONTINUOUS FORCE CLOSE POP-UPS

Helix Launcher locking up phone

After trying to navigate, in between a continuous stream of Force Close pop-up boxes, to uninstall the Helix his stock phone Norm2000 did the following:

So I followed instructions I found on the web to master reset - turn on while holding the slide-out keyboard 'X'; then scroll down a menu that comes up to master reset.

Since I had checked the box to backup my settings to my Google account (I had forgotten I did that), it was easy to re-setup the phone. In about 15 minutes, I was set back up again. I was afraid the Helix would fire back up but it didn't. It showed installed, but was not coming up by default (thankfully). I uninstalled it.

HOW TO RESOLVE OUT OF STORAGESPACE MEMORY ISSUE:

no room for apps.

1) Open Astro File Manager - free from the Market
2) Press the Menu key
3) Select Tools
4) Select "Application Manager/Backup"
5) Backup All Apps
6) Uninstalled all apps except Astro (if you uninstall Astro, you will have to download it again from the Market to continue)
7) From the backed-up apps column - reinstall all apps
The end result is all the downloaded install files are now stored on the card's memory storage instead of the phone's memory storage

HOW TO RETURN A PAID APP TO THE MARKET:

You have 24 hours from the time of purchase (not download) to return an application purchased through Android Market for a full refund. You may only return a given application once; if you subsequently purchase the same app again, you may not return it a second time.

How to return an app:
    1. From Market, visit the My Downloads page, and select the application you'd like to return.
    2. Applications that are eligible for return are marked with a 'Uninstall & Refund' button. Please note that after the 24-hour return period has expired, all sales are final.
    3. After 24 hours, selecting the "Uninstall" button will simply remove the application from your device.
Locate Refund:

When the seller refunds your order, your Google Checkout account should immediately reflect this change. Cancelled orders are automatically refunded. You can verify the refund has been finalized in your Google Checkout account. After an order is refunded, you may notice a pending authorization on your credit/debit card. The pending authorization will expire from your account in 1 to 14 business days. Contact your bank for details.

Retry Failed Refund:

Funds will automatically be returned to the credit/debit card used at the time of purchase. If your bank declines a refund from Google, you'll need to update your card or provide a new card to receive your refund; the money will automatically be returned to the new or updated card.
First, contact your bank to determine why a refund failed. Next, retry the refund by updating your declined credit/debit card, or add a new card to your Google Checkout account.

To add a new card to your Google Checkout account:

    1. Sign in to your account at Google Checkout.
    2. Click Edit payment methods.
    3. Enter your credit/debit card details and billing address under Add a new payment method.
      Click Save.
To update an existing card, click Edit under the card information you would like to change. After you've made the desired updates, click Save.

When you add or update a card, you may see a temporary $1.00 line-item on your statement. The temporary line item will expire automatically, but it may take several days for the refund to appear on your statement. Specific turnaround times vary by card issuing bank. Please contact your bank for details.

HOW TO USE THE LONG PRESS AND THE MENU KEY:

Thanks to moderator 640 k for these instructions:

If you don't know already, magical things can happen if you LONG PRESS buttons on the Droid and "hidden" menus will appear if you hit the Menu button (on either the keyboard or the screen).

But did you know if you long press the menu key, while the menu is open, you'll get a list of shortcuts to those items in the menu?

Here's a handy list of things that can be accomplished with a LONG PRESS or through finding menus you may have not known existed (feel free to contribute):

From anywhere:
LONG PRESS the home icon to bring up a list of the last six applications used.

In the Browser:
LONG PRESS the back button for a complete history of pages you've visited, most visited pages and your bookmarks. The same can be accomplished by hitting menu - bookmarks.

If you LONG PRESS the items in your history, another menu appears, allowing you to open the link in various ways, create a bookmark or delete it from history (handy).

From the Settings Menu (Home - Menu - Settings):
MENU brings up options of display "type" in Manage Applications, that will allow you to view only Downloaded apps, Running apps or All apps when Filter is selected. This can be handy for people who don't have or don't want other task management programs to force close apps.

From Any Contact:
Click their image and a speak bubble will appear with a list of options of how to communicate with that contact.

HOW TO EXTEND YOUR BATTERY LIFE:

Things you should know about charging your battery.

New batteries are not fully charged. Plug the battery charger into your phone and an electrical outlet. Your phone might take several seconds to start charging the battery.

Tips:

It may take several charging cycles for your battery to reach optimum performance.
The battery charger shipped with this device is a high rate charger specifically designed for your DROID.

Other chargers might take longer to charge your battery, cause your calls to fail during charging, or cause your phone to continuously power cycle.

You can charge your phone via USB cable but this charging time will vary based on computer specifications.

If battery is low, your phone will not immediately power up when you connect it to a computer via USB. Depending on how low the battery is, it may take up to 30 minutes for the phone to get enough power to powerup.

There are two built in tools to assist you in optimizing battery life.

1. Power control widget

The Power Control Widget gives you a quick snapshot of some of the tools that may be draining your battery. The widget provides information on Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Location (GPS),

Synchronization, and Display

To add the Power control widget:

From the home screen, touch Menu > Add > Widgets > Power Control

2. Battery Use Feature

The Battery Use feature provides you with a real time view of what features or applications are using the highest percentage of your battery. It also provides tips on modifying these features or applications.

To access Battery Use:

From the home screen, touch Menu > Settings > About Phone > Battery use

Tips to extend battery life:

Select a shorter backlight duration

Lower the display brightness

Use the AC adapter to charge your phone whenever possible

Turn Bluetooth off when not in use

Turn Wi-Fi off when not in use

Certain applications may be drawing excessive battery power. If you are experiencing shorter
battery life after downloading an application try uninstalling the application.

Close any third party applications running in the background

Playing music, videos and viewing images in your phone will affect your battery life.

General Battery use & safety

Motorola recommends you always use Motorola-branded batteries and chargers. The warranty does not cover damage caused by non-Motorola batteries and/or chargers.

Caution: Use of an unqualified battery or charger may present a risk of fire, explosion, leakage, or other hazard. Improper battery use, or use of a damaged battery, may result in a fire, explosion, or other hazard.

Your battery can be charged without it being fully depleted, and can be charged every day if desired.

Battery usage by children should be supervised.

Important: Motorola mobile devices are designed to work best with qualified batteries. If you see a message on your display such as Invalid Battery, Invalid Charger or Unable to
Charge, take the following steps:

Remove the battery and inspect it to confirm that it bears a Motorola "Original Equipment" hologram;

If there is no hologram, the battery is not a qualified battery

If there is a hologram, replace the battery and retry charging it

If the message remains, contact a Motorola Authorized Service Center

New batteries or batteries stored for a long time may take more time to charge.

Charging precautions: When charging your battery, keep it near room temperature. Never expose batteries to temperatures below 0°C (32°F) or above 45°C (113°F) when charging.

Always take your mobile device with you when you leave your vehicle

When storing your battery, keep it in a cool, dry place.

It is normal over time for battery life to decrease, and for the battery to exhibit shorter runtime between charges or require more frequent or longer charging times. Motorola batteries are designed to last between 350-700 charge/discharge cycles at room temperature. This amounts to approximately a year to a year and a half of battery use for most people.

Avoid damage to battery and mobile device. Do not disassemble, open, crush, bend, deform, puncture, shred, or submerge the battery or mobile device. Avoid dropping the battery or mobile device, especially on a hard surface. If your battery or mobile device has been subjected to such damage, take it to a local service center before using. Do not attempt to dry it with an appliance or heat source, such as a hair dryer or microwave oven.

Use care when handling a charged battery-particularly when placing it inside a pocket, purse, or other container with metal objects. Contact with metal objects (such as jewelry, keys, beaded chains) could complete an electrical circuit (short circuit), causing the battery to become very hot, which could cause damage or injury.

HOW TO OPERATE THE DROID TOUCHSCREEN:

Here are some things to keep in mind regarding your touch screen:

Your phone has a capacitive touch screen which requires your skin to touch the screen. If you are using a screen protector your screen may not work as designed.

Changing the sensitivity of the screen is not currently supported.

To activate / deactivate your screen press the Power Key located on the top of the phone.

Your phone has a proximity sensor that disables the touch screen during a call (while near your face), or while in a pocket or case.

Here are some tips on how to navigate around your phone.

Tap

To open an icon or option, tap it.

Tap & hold (LONG PRESS)

To move an icon or open special options, tap and hold an icon or other item, this is also commonly referred to as the LONG PRESS. The LONG PRESS brings up hidden menus and options and allows you to move icons around on the screen. If you LONG PRESS an icon and drag it to the bottom of the screen, you can delete it from that screen.

Drag

To scroll through a list or move slowly, drag across the touchscreen.

Tip: When you drag or flick a list, a scroll bar appears on the right. Drag the scroll bar to move the list to a letter A - Z.

Flick

To scroll through a list or move quickly, flick across the touchscreen (drag quickly and release).

Tip: When you flick a long list, tap the screen to stop it from scrolling.

Pinch to Zoom (also referred to as Multi Touch)

Use pinch to zoom to get a closer look at maps or web pages. To zoom in, double-tap the screen OR with your thumb and index finger, expand to zoom. To zoom out, double tap the screen again OR pinch your thumb and index finger together.
