Somewhat rooted with .629

So a buddy of mine got the update to .629. He still has root....sort of. He can still use root explorer it says super user accepted. But if he tries to use rom manager which he downloaded after the update, it says denied. Now when he powers off the phone and boots it back up it will boot into clockwork recovery. Can anyone explain this for me?

open superuser and see if rom manager was logged change to allow
booting into cwm is a bootstrap issue
look for removing logwrapper or hijack
in droid wiki or proper use of droid 2 bootstrap both are listed in my links page in my sig
