Possible to put call on hold?

The title says it all: when on a call, I'd like to be able to check my calendar. Is it possible to put the call on hold while I do so? If so, how would I do it?

I just put the phone on speaker and then hit the home button and now you can access your whole phone.

Mute the call, press home, open calendar, pull down the notification bar and press "Current Call", un-mute, and continue call. Or don't do the mute part and keep the call active.

I agree.. putting the phone on speaker phone is the most handy.. unless your in a mixed crowd where you don't want to share the conversation.
