Messengers synced with contacts

I've noticed you can add IM services to your contacts and when you save it, it gives use the option to select to chat with yahoo or whatever but it doesn't do anything. I'm wondering if maybe there is an IM app that syncs with it. If not that would be a nice option like th BB.
