Seeing if friends are online on Droid

Okay, so I have noticed, and I think only when using the stock "messaging" app that came stock with my Droid 1, that some contacts get a Green Dot on them when they are online on their Gmail or such. Now, when I am going through editing my contacts, I have noticed that there quite a few different programs available when setting up a contacts IM user names.

1st: Will that green dot show up, say if they are on Yahoo Messenger or Yahoo if you add that persons yahoo email address or yahoo messenger username? Or will it only show when they are online with a green dot in Google Talk/Gmail only, and the other stuff is just for reference?

2nd: Is "Messenger" the only place where I can see that green dot appear if they are online on my stock Droid?

3rd: Do you have to add their gmail account under Google Talk under IM settings in edit contacts to see this green dot when they are online?

I am pretty sure they need to be on your friend list in G-talk and online for the green dot to appear.
