Lowering the brightness further?

Question:
Is there a way to make the lowest brightness setting... lower? It's fine @ the office and indoors in moderate lighting, but at night with the lights off, it is much too bright, especially when someone else in the room is trying to sleep.

I know with the factory settings there is no way to do this, but does anyone with modding experience know if a program could be written to do this? Or does it need to be rooted first?

Did you try the power control widget?
Press and hold on one of the home screens and select add widget and add power control, it lets you toggle on and off wifi, blue tooth,GPS,sync and 3 settings for screen brightness.

yeah I use that all the time, my point is that the lowest brightness setting is not low enough, especially @ night with all the lights off. I want to be able to lower it much further.
