I don't get a pop-up asking for ES privileges. I wonder why?

You already have read/write access granted? I've only used es file manager a couple of times.

I only have to re-enable write access when ES updates itself through the Play Store.

Ya, and I guess we are stuck with it!

The only way to get stuff on the card, or edit filenames, is to plug it into a computer!

Not at all. if you use ES file explorer and follow the steps in the posts above, you can transfer files very easily from within the device. See posts 13 & 14.
