initial programming for a newbie

Hello I have an og Droid rooted and flashed to cricket running cm7.2 I recently dropped it and broke the charger port. My friend had a broken Droid that he let me have so rather than risk replacing the port I replaced the board upon turning the phone on it booted into bootloader and said initial programming needed so I opened rsd lite and tried to flash 2.1 to my phone which failed due tobp passthrough passnumerous times so I swapped. the boards out again then tried again a week later same story but this time I tried Apr and that flashed fine is there anybody that cask tell me what I'm doing wrong please I've been charging my phone with a cut charger for about a month and a half now please
