How to make a rom?

If I use an already made ROM for the Droid X and I change it a bit to make it "my own", and after I re-zip it, what do I have to do? I read an old post on Android Central about Signing it with a program which I did. But when I try to install it in Clockwork Recovery it just freezes at the "Installing" phase. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
