help with upgrade path

I am trying to get to the .901 update after i previously flashed the 5.7.893 update. If I do not wish to root then do i just run the bionic pathsaver? If root is the only way to do this then I don't mind I have always wanted to root my phone. Just looking for advice before I start messing with my phone. Also if i do root can someone explain to me how to make a backup in either safestrap or bionic bootstrap.
